Chess Tactics
Playing chess requires a knowledge of what chess tactics should be used in an average chess game. Any player who wants to improve their chess game should know some strategy and chess tactics. A chess tactic is a short order of moves which limit the opponent’s choices of play. A successful chess tactic results in a gain for the individual. Chess tactics are used for twisting an opponent’s mistake and using them for the individual’s advantage. Many games of chess are lost because of a mistaken chess tactic.
• The simplest chess tactic involves capturing the opponent’s chess piece. Since the point of the game of chess is to result in the opponent king’s checkmate, this is easiest accomplished when one opponent takes down the other opponents chess pieces, leaving their king defenseless. A chess tactic that involves one opponent capturing the other opponent’s undefended piece is called capturing a piece “en prise” and is a common chess tactic. Chess tactics can sometimes involve one chess piece attacking two or more of their opponent’s pieces at once. This chess tactic is called a fork. Although every chess piece, even the least powerful pawns can fork, the knights are best known for it.
• Another common chess tactic is called a pin. A pin involves making sure that the opponent’s chess pieces have very limited movement. The way to create a pin is by attacking an opponent’s chess piece in a way so that if it moves at all, a more valuable piece of theirs will be captured. This chess tactic occurs when a particular chess piece is in front of a more valuable chess piece. Unlike with forks, chess tactics involving pins can only be performed by queens, bishops and rooks. An absolute pin is a chess tactic that depends on the location of the king. If the pinned piece is in front of the king, then it cannot move, since it’s an illegal move for an individual to put their own king in check.
• Another chess tactic is a skewer. Skewers look like pins but they actually work in reverse. Chess tactics involving skewers happen when a valuable chess piece is attacked and has to move to avoid an inevitable capture. Skewers leave chess pieces that aren’t as valuable behind to be taken instead. Skewers can only be made by bishops, queen, and rooks.
These are some of the most basic chess tactics that can be used by an individual to improve their chess game. Although there are other complicated chess tactics that can be learned as a player advances, using these chess tactics to start can be beneficial to a beginner.
